How a speculative email led to a leadership role in under a decade…
Back in 2016, Andrew McQueen joined MMG fresh from university with a Maths degree and a speculative email. He wasn’t sure where a career in accountancy might take him, but he knew he wanted to get stuck in and learn on the job. Nine years later, he’s now a Director, helping shape the future of MMG and advising clients across Tayside.
A Different Route
While many of his classmates were heading into teaching or academia, Andrew had other plans. He sent his CV to nearly every accountancy firm in Dundee. MMG was the one that got back to him.
He started out as a trainee, doing admin tasks while waiting to begin his ICAS qualification. It wasn’t glamorous, but it gave him a solid foundation and an early sense of where he could grow.
“I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. But once I started, I knew I was in the right place.”
Growing with the Job
As the years went on, Andrew’s responsibilities grew. He studied for his qualifications while building his client portfolio, moving into a Client Manager role and working with businesses on everything from bookkeeping to audit. {Payroll probably the only place where I have not spent any time officially}
“I’ve probably been involved in every kind of service we offer. That’s been one of the best things about my experience at MMG—you get to try a bit of everything and figure out what you’re good at.”
By the time MMG restructured in 2022, Andrew was ready for more. He stepped into a new role as Audit Manager and started studying for his Chartered Tax Advisor qualification, all while continuing to support many of the same clients he’d worked with for years.
Stepping Up
When a colleague went on maternity leave, Andrew was asked to take the lead on the Virtual Finance team. It was his first taste of department leadership and a chance to support colleagues, not just clients.
“It felt like the next step. I’d been helping people technically for a while, but I wanted to support their growth and development too.”
That experience gave him the confidence to take on bigger challenges and paved the way for his next move.
Becoming a Director
In 2025, Andrew became a Director at MMG. The new role brings together everything he’s learned so far, with a focus on strategy, client relationships, and growing the business.
“My main focus now is building relationships, winning work, and delivering advisory and tax planning support. I don’t have direct reports anymore, but I’ll still be working closely with teams across the firm to keep raising the bar.”
Looking Ahead
So what’s next? For Andrew, it’s about playing a bigger part in MMG’s future while continuing to support the people around him.
“I’m most looking forward to having a say in where we’re going and helping move things forward.”
Looking back, Andrew says MMG’s structure gave him the space to learn, explore and find his own path.
“There’s real variety here. You can try different things, find what you enjoy, and build your role around that. It’s a brilliant place to learn and develop.”
