With the 31st of January self-assessment deadline just around the corner, HMRC is urging taxpayers to stay vigilant against scams. Over the past year, scam reports to HMRC have risen by 16.7%, with nearly 150,000 reports made by November 2024. Many of these were fake tax rebate claims.
Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself:
- HMRC will never ask for personal or financial details via text message.
- They also won’t leave threatening voicemails about legal action or arrest.
If you get a message claiming to be from HMRC that asks for personal details or offers a tax rebate, check the official guidance on GOV.UK to confirm if it’s a scam. Identify HMRC-related scams.
